Tannin Bleed Is The First Problem Oak Cabinet Painting Must Solve
Water-based primer draws tannin out of oak, and it shows up as brown or yellow patches in the paint, sometimes weeks later. Shellac primer traps it inside the wood. It is the only primer we use as the first coat on bare or sanded oak.
Knots and old water stains near the sink get an extra coat of the same blocker. This step adds a little time, but it is what keeps oak cabinet painting clean and even for years. After that, a normal cabinet primer and two or three topcoats go on top, sprayed thin and sanded lightly between coats.
Filling The Grain Is A Choice Made Before Oak Cabinet Painting Starts
Oak has open pores that show through paint as a fine texture. Some people like it because it still looks like wood. Others want a smooth, modern face that looks like a new factory door.
For a flat, glassy face, filler goes on two or three times with sanding after each pass. It adds time and cost to oak cabinet painting, and we price it as its own line. An open grain is cheaper and fits a warmer, more classic room. We can spray a sample of each on one door so you can compare.
Painting an oak kitchen in Mississauga typically comes to $2,500 through $5,500, plus the cost of grain filling if chosen. Replacement doors cost somewhere from $3,000 up to $10,000, while an all-new kitchen starts near $15,000. Your own figure comes on the written quote.
Arched Doors From The 1980s Can Still Look Current
Cathedral and arched doors are common in Erindale split-levels and two-story homes built in the 1980s. Painted in a soft white, a greige or a muted green, with simple new pulls, they look far less dated than they did in golden oak.
When the arch is the part you cannot live with, new shaker doors on the existing boxes are an option. Both paths are weighed on cabinet refacing and door replacement. New pulls are covered under cabinet hardware and soft-close hinges.
Oak Doors Move With The Seasons
Oak rail-and-stile doors swell in humid months and shrink when the furnace runs. A hairline can open at the panel edge in winter and close again in summer. The oak is shifting; the oak cabinet painting itself is fine. Spraying thin coats and letting the doors adjust to the house before priming keeps those lines as small as possible.
Oak Cabinet Painting Starts With A Deep Clean
Oak kitchens built in the seventies and eighties usually hold decades of polish, wax and frying residue. These soak into the open grain and stop primer from sticking. Before any oak cabinet painting, we scrub the doors and frames with a degreaser, rinse them and let them dry.
Polish with silicone in it is the hardest to remove, and it causes small craters in fresh paint called fish eyes. If we find it, we clean again with a stronger product and note it on the quote. Skipping this step is why some painted oak kitchens peel within a year.
